Pepper, Art Complete Village Vanguard Sessions, The Contemporary 9CCD-4417-2 I had purchased the four individual CDs that were released from this July 28-30, 1977 recording session. I sold them and bought the 9 disk set as soon as it was released. These 9 CDs contain everything that happened during those three nights. The quartet includes George Cables, George Mraz and Elvin Jones. Great cuts: Blues for Heard [17:06], Las Cuevas de Mario [14:06], Stella By Starlight [17:33]. The great thing about this Art Pepper set is that most of the cuts are over 10 minutes long. This allows the quartet to go beyond the basic song and really explore additional themes. Peterson, Oscar Good Life, The Pablo Live OJCCD-627-2 (2308-241) This is a great CD. The first two cuts are perfect, Wheatland (written by Oscar) [12:17] and Wave [10:46]. The trio on this CD includes Joe Pass and Neils-Henning Orsted Pederson. Peterson, Oscar Live At The Northsea Jazz Festival The Hague, Holland, 1980 Pablo Live CD-2620-115 This is a great CD. Unfortunately I think it is only available as an import from Germany. I bought it at the Amsterdam Airport. The band is Joe pass, Toots Thielesmans and Neils-Henning Orsted Pederson. They do an 11:20 version of Caravan and an 8:51 version of Straight, No Chaser. This is classic Oscar Peterson. Peterson, Oscar Nigerian Marketplace Pablo Live PACD-2308-231-2 This is probably my favorite Oscar Peterson CD. The trio on this CD includes Terry Clark and Neils-Henning Orsted Pederson. This is a must for Oscar Peterson fans. Peterson, Oscar Personal Touch, The Pablo Today PACD-2312-135-2 I feel bad writing this. Oscar Peterson is my favorite Jazz performer, but......maybe he shouldn't be singing. He sings on just about every other song of the 13 tracks on this CD. The instrumentals are pretty good, but the vocal tracks are a bit flat and the song selections are tacky (You Needed Me, Sometimes When We Touch, etc.). Tatum, Art California Melodies Memphis Archives MA7007 I found this at Best Buy. It is a 1940 recording of a weekly radio program. The recording is surprisingly good. This is a good Tatum disc. It is a bit irritating to have the radio announcer describing each piece, but it does add to the quaintness I suppose. Burnside, R.L. Come On In Fat Possum 80317-2
I found this one at the library!
I really didn't expect much.
Boy was I surprised!
This album is really interesting.
It is a mixture of blues, hip-hop and rock.
You should check out this album even if you don't like the blues.
I can't really describe it properly.
Loeb, Peter Four of Me PAL Music
This jazz "quartet" swings!
"They" are reminiscent of Dave Brubeck in the 50's, but with "their" own sound.
In my opinion, track 2 - Four of Me and track 6 - Altered are standouts on this 12 track CD.
And in no small feat, the "quartet" composed 10 of the 12 selections. |
